How I Forgave Jamie Oliver

31Jul

photo by E.L. Natiello If you have the time and the patience, and room in your heart to forgive chef Jamie Oliver for referring to his Crispy and Sticky Chicken Thighs with Squashed New Potatoes and Tomatoes as a “simple pan-baked chicken dish” then I encourage you to try this recipe. But for God’s sake, know up front that it is not “simple.” Okay perhaps, technically, it is “simple” but “simple” implies “quick.” Doesn’t it

By MIA STEINLE Royalties and other revenues that companies pay to extract natural resources from public landsconstitute one of the federal government’s largest sources of income — a whopping $13 billion in 2014. NEW YORK — New York City may divest hundreds of millions of dollars from Walmart and other big-name stores that sell guns and ammunition less than two years after it yanked investments in the country’s biggest gun manufacturers.  Trustees for the New York City Employees Retirement System , or NYCERS, one of the largest U.S. pension funds with more than 300,000 active members, passed a resolution this week to study the impact of selling its shares in major gun retailers, including Walmart, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and Cabela’s.  “Our nation is bleeding from gun violence, and we cannot and should not bolster the gun retailers whose weapons are used to kill and maim our citizens,” Public Advocate Letitia James, who introduced the resolution, said in a statement.   “Our public money must not be invested in companies that fundamentally undermine our public safety,” James continued.

Weighing in on Women and Beer

31Jul

It’s time to share some personal thoughts on a theme I seem to speak to on a weekly basis: women and beer. In light of the recent Bud Light #UpForWhatever campaign, which included the tagline, “The perfect beer for removing ‘no’ from your vocabulary for the night,” the topic has surfaced once again–and the conversation is spilling over into the craft beer world

ROME (AP) – An Italian anti-death penalty group has honored Pope Francis with the prize “Abolitionist of the Year” for his strong position against the death penalty  and other forms of “inhumane and degrading” punishments. “Hands off Cain” on Friday cited Francis’ moves to remove from the Vatican criminal code  life sentences, which he called “a death penalty in disguise.” The pope has frequently lashed out against the death penalty, calling it “inadmissible” no matter the offense. The Italian group in its annual report  said the number of executions carried out worldwide rose to 3,576 last year from 3,511 a year earlier, with China carrying out two-thirds of the total

Jean Keating has one quite personal hope for her foster dog Colt: that the pit bull pup will poop.  “New opportunities and adventures will be open to Colt if he can poop like every other puppy,” Keating says.  Colt’s funky bowels have been the focus of Keating’s attention for quite some time now.  This past April, when he arrived at her Ohio home, Colt was a tiny dog with a big problem. Seven weeks old, and just 2.68 pounds, the wee pit bull had been spotted for sale online, by a volunteer with Keating’s rescue group, the Lucas County Pit Crew . It was clear from his photos that the puppy was very sick.  Colt had some sort of infection in the beginning, possibly from a botched surgery to fix what is now assumed to have been an anal prolapse (that means some of his rectal tissue was poking out of his behind).  The vet wasn’t sure he’d make it, given how sick he was.

For me, it started with a gang of my friends from Brooklyn Technical High School, taking the train to the New York City World’s Fair, circa 1965, and running around like maniacs, trying then-AT&T’s fiber optic-based video-conferencing system, where you could go into an egg-shaped ‘phone room’, and like magic, see you other friends in other eggs spread throughout the Fair.

It was 50 years ago Thursday that President Lyndon Johnson  signed  the legislation that created Medicare, dramatically altering life for America’s seniors.  But as debate over the program rages on, its conservative critics have learned to be more crafty about what alternatives they propose — and how to justify them.   When Johnson signed the bill, he did so alongside an aging Harry Truman  — who, two decades before that, had become the first sitting president to pursue universal health care seriously. Medicare, Johnson promised, would help realize Truman’s dream for the nation’s elderly: “No longer will older Americans be denied the healing miracle of modern medicine,” Johnson said.

NEW YORK — Will Dana, the managing editor of Rolling Stone, is leaving the publication in August, four months after the magazine retracted a bogus story about a gang rape at the University of Virginia, a spokeswoman confirmed.  Dana, who spent nearly two decades at the magazine, oversaw the newsroom during its biggest journalistic breakdown in nearly a half-century of publishing.  Several news outlets and bloggers quickly poked serious holes in Rolling Stone’s “A Rape on Campus,”published in late November. Dana went silent for months  before Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, which the magazine commissioned to investigate the story, concluded  in April that it was a “journalistic failure that could have been avoided.” The New York Times first reported  the news of Dana’s departure Wednesday night, just hours after three members of Phi Kappa Psi, the fraternity at the center of the purported gang rape, sued the magazine  and the article’s author, Sabrina Rubin Erdely. They’re not the only ones seeking retribution in respone to the discredited story. Nicole Eramo, a UVA associate dean of students, filed a defamation suit  against Rolling Stone in May.  Many in journalism circles were shocked that Dana, his deputy editor Sean Woods, and Erdely were not fired or suspended in the wake of Columbia’s findings
