Angela Corey, the Democratic Florida prosecutor who presided over some the Fourth Judicial Circuit Court’s most controversial cases of the past several years, lost her bid for reelection Tuesday night bringing her eight-year tenure to an end.  Melissa Nelson emerged as the Republican primary winner , earning more than 64 percent of the vote compared to Corey’s 26 percent. A third challenger, Wes White, collected less than 10 percent.  Corey’s loss was cheered by defense lawyer and academics, many of whom had criticized her aggressive prosecution, particularly of juveniles.   “Corey’s loss is an encouraging sign that the public will no longer tolerate overzealous and unprincipled criminal prosecutions, including women and children,” Mary Anne Franks, a law professor at the University of Miami, said in a statement Tuesday.  Even musician John Legend, who cofounded the criminal justice reform campaign #FreeAmerica weighed in on the Fourth Judicial Circuit State’s Attorney’s race

August may be coming to an end, but there’s still plenty of time to make some magical summer food. From the veggies you can still pick up at the farmer’s market ― we’re looking at your,  zucchini ,  eggplant  and  basil — to the sweet summer fruits and  berries  that are still hanging around, you’ve still got options before it turns into pumpkin season. And of course, the weather’s still warm enough to fire up your grill and make some  barbecue  (and  barbecue sides ) and burgers .

Seattle’s Bumbershoot may be a bit lesser known than some of its summer festival cohorts like Lollapalooza and Coachella, but that doesn’t mean we should be any less excited about it! When a pig farmer reported an animal rights activist for interfering with his property, he likely didn’t anticipate that he’d be setting up the entire meat industry to be put on trial. Yet, that’s exactly what happened last week when Anita Krajnc pled not guilty to mischief charges for having given water to a pig overheating on the farmer’s transport truck. It’s hard to credibly dispute that the pig was in distress

The Fateful August Of Donald J. Trump

30Ago

In the month since the conventions, the jittery surface of the 24 hour news cycle has been roiled by crosscurrents, its avatars trumpeting each new event as more dramatic than the last. But beneath there is a sickly stillness of a candidacy mired in the swampland of Donald Trump’s own mind, creating a numbing ennui seeping through the electorate like encephalitis in slow motion. Too many Americans have realized who he is.

The small border traffic (a visa-free regime) between Russia’s Kaliningrad region and several northern counties in Poland was hailed as a success of the former Polish government of Donald Tusk working jointly, among others, with the city of Gdansk for rapprochement between people of both nations. The success was achieved regardless of “big politics”, but the visa-free regime has been currently suspended by Law and Justice government.
