Jeurys Familia , an All-Star closing pitcher for the New York Mets who recently appeared in an ad campaign against domestic violence , was arrested for domestic violence  on Monday, the Bergen Record reports.  Fort Lee, New Jersey, police accused Familia, identified as Jeurys F. Mojica, of causing “bodily injury to another,” according to a complaint posted Tuesday by The Record. The victim, whose name is redacted from the complaint, had “visible injuries, specifically a scratch to the chest and bruise to the right cheek.” Familia, 27, was arrested after an officer who responded to the incident “found probable cause to believe domestic violence had occurred,” the complaint states. The athlete was charged with simple assault, and bail was set at $1,500.  In a statement to The Record, the Mets said, “The matter was brought to our attention and we are monitoring the situation.” Familia was among a number of athletes who recently starred in an ad campaign sponsored by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence .

Matthew Broderick & Annaleigh Ashford (photo: Joan Marcus) “Once you have had a wonderful dog, a life without one, is a life diminished.” –Dean Koontz I know a few people who don’t like dogs and I’ve also met some who don’t like chocolate, rainbows or red wine so perhaps Sylvia , which opened tonight at the Cort Theatre isn’t for everyone but it most certainly is a crowd pleaser. Greg (Matthew Broderick) finds a dog — Sylvia – (Annaleigh Ashford) in the park and brings her home as a way to ease the pain of his mid-life crisis. His kids have just left the nest and his wife Kate (Julie White) is hoping to spend time at museums, dinner parties and Knicks games instead of being tethered to a dog, so this is – to say the least – a huge disruption in their lives.

Ultimately, the best part about sports has nothing to do with championships, awards, win-loss records, or outstanding statistical performances. Those things are all ego-based. The best part about sports is the strong relationships that are formed – often for life

By James M. Dorsey Millions across the Middle East and North Africa will cheer Algeria, the only Arab squad to qualify for the 2014 World Cup, when it meets Belgium this week in its first tournament match. That enthusiasm, certainly among fans who are aware of their power, is however likely to be tempered by the growing realization that politics, political interference, and whimsical micro-management by vain club owners has stymied performance by potential regional powerhouses

By Sharon Bernstein SACRAMENTO, Calif., June 10 (Reuters) – Drought-stricken California could increase its water supply by a third by reusing water that would otherwise go down the drain and saving storm runoff, environmentalists said on Tuesday amid wrangling over the state’s response to dry conditions. The report by the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Pacific Institute came as Democrats and Republicans in the state Legislature bickered over whether to ask voters to spend money on new reservoirs and other water storage projects, or concentrate more on conservation and recycling efforts preferred by environmentalists. “With widespread adoption of available water conservation and efficiency improvements, demand can be met more readily, less expensively, and with less pressure on our tapped-out rivers and groundwater basins,” said Peter Gleick, president of the Pacific Institute sustainability group
