Six years ago, Jackie came back from a visit to her friend in Warsaw with the recipe for one of the great simple dumplings: leniwe pierogi, or lazy pierogi. They’re lazy (or the cook is) because, first, there’s no filling, just dough (a delicious cheese-based one at that); and, secondly, because they take just a few minutes to make. They can be eaten by themselves with butter and optional fried breadcrumbs, as a dessert, with butter and sugar, or even as a side dish with braised meat – not traditional, but delicious.
The inglorious TV election drama has finally ended. In Left Coast San Francisco, a post-election pall of fog hangs over our city, much like the hanging chads of 2000. We finally have a president-elect, but he might not be the one you wanted
I’m standing on Pennsylvania Avenue watching Donald Trump’s Inauguration Parade. As he waves to the crowd, I try to shout, but my voice is drowned out by the screaming masses around me. I struggle to speak, but things start spinning and then I’m falling.
It’s no secret that we’re bombarded with bothersome headlines more often than pleasant ones.
It has been almost a week and I am still not prepared for President Trump. I was sure that Hillary Clinton had it in the bag. I had convinced myself that Donald Trump’s arresting, but toxic, message, his misogyny and rage against the “other”, together with his general lack of discipline, organization or depth would do him in.

For the first time in my 50 years on this earth, I have started to doubt that I will see a woman president in my lifetime. There I said it. I have had to wrestle with, and accept a fact so foreign and unexplainable to me: a lot of women seem to have an innate bias against other women

As a Latina, I’m more than concerned by the shocking news that yesterday history was made, but not in the sense we expected. It was supposed to be the moment for the first female president in the US history, a moment to remember, as has happened in every country where the presidential glass ceiling has been broken.
Screenshot: Freelance Entrepreneur The daily life of the freelance entrepreneur can be really filled with lots of irregularities and uncertainties but most of us would rather be self employed than have a 9-5 job and work for someone else. But just because we’ve decided to leave the corporate life doesn’t mean we freelancers can’t borrow best business practices from the corporate world
Dear Hillary: I’m an Independent, former Republican, and I’m voting for you. I have disagreed with some of your political views, but I’ve been a fan of yours since your “baking cookies” comment in 1992 . If we are lucky enough to dodge the catastrophe of Donald Trump there is no going back to politics as usual.
It was an impossible task. Get together the million selling lead singer of Snap! Thea Austin, who is often out touring singing one of her 20 #1 singles including “Rhythm Is A Dancer;” Morgan Mallory, in demand live artist, new album “Manifesto” out and now the former Voice contestant is a vocal teacher; Daniel Charleston, in demand in Southern California for his chorus performances and as a featured artist in Pacific Opera Project; and me, the big gay entertainer and talk show host with a dream to sing about being better.
His name is Donald J. Trump and he approved this message! If anyone has any doubt about the authoritarian, fascistic nature of Donald Trump’s campaign for President, take a look at his virulently anti-Semitic closing campaign ad, which is laced with longstanding themes of anti-Semitism.
The Canon 5D Mark IV arrived almost 4 years after the amazing 5D Mark III and during those 4 years, almost every aspect of the camera has seen some form of upgrade. With a new 30MP sensor, faster 7fps shooting, 4k video, dual pixel autofocus, a touch screen, GPS and WIFI (to name a few), the Canon 5D Mark IV at first glance appears to be an amazing upgrade
Some folks who identify as progressive — and therefore oppose Clinton — still think it is OK to vote for Jill Stein in so-called safe states. I urge you to think again. No matter who wins on Tuesday, the only hope to advance a progressive agenda is to build a unified, integrated progressive movement at the local, state and national levels
When Donald Trump was one of 17 candidates vying for the Republican nomination, he was asked about autism at a debate in September 2015. Trump put the blame squarely on vaccines: “You take this little beautiful baby, and you pump — I mean, it looks just like it’s meant for a horse, not for a child, and we’ve had so many instances, people that work for me, just the other day …

Eleven years ago this August I was deployed in Iraq with the Lima Company combat unit, and recently, I reunited with my fellow Marines to commemorate the anniversary. Looking around, I was taken by how many of them are still serving — in the military, as police offers, or helping others as doctors and lawyers. I shouldn’t be surprised.
How would I — or you — look to the world if subjected to 30 years of relentless, organized and fully-funded lies, calumny, distortions, faux outrage, hypocrisy, fabrications, attempted bullying and flagrant misogyny? Battered? Yes

This Natural Disaster Assistance Law Is Why Other States Are Policing Dakota Access Pipeline Protests
Cross-Posted from DeSmogBlog Almost exactly 20 years ago, President Bill Clinton signed into law a bill creating an interstate agreement for emergency management. That inconspicuous law has opened the door for the current flood of out-of-state law enforcement agents present at the continuing protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) in North Dakota.

If you’ve heard common student-loan horror stories, you might think that borrowing for school will leave you owing six figures, facing arrest for failure to pay and shackling your family to your debt even if you die. But those are extreme cases. Student loans are a smart career investment as long as you borrow in moderation and graduate.
For the past 6 years we have been told, THIS would be the year of the 3D Printer. As much as manufacturers would love for every man, woman and child to suddenly decide they need a 3D printer, it just has not happened. While there are many explanations for why 3D printers have not gone mainstream, one factor has been price.
The import series Brief Encounters proves again that while British actresses often seem as prim as their country’s reputation, they also love a chance to get naughty every so often. You could call Brief Encounters a period piece of sorts, since it’s set in the early 1980s, but this is a very different sort of costume drama. The outfits here run toward skimpy underwear, the type popularized in Britain by Ann Summers
A common question I get is “How do I get a bank loan to fund my startup?” The default answer is that it probably won’t happen, because most banks just don’t make bank loans to startups. The failure rate is just too high, and startups typically don’t have the assets or revenue stream to back up the loan. That’s why Angel investors are so sought after by entrepreneurs
i mage courtesy Wikicommons If the 2016 election seems to be more like a Reality TV Show than an election, it is for a simple reason: it is. I should know. I spent years producing Reality TV, and this one is a ratings winner, even if it is a disaster for the nation.
We’re in 2016 and we start our grim mid-week morning in a Ferrari that transports us back to 1985, the year that marked the arrival of the Ferrari Testarossa Monospecchio. Testarossa, which means red head in italian, was the name given to the car because it’s engine featured two red coloured rocker covers
Traditionally older Americans vote in larger percentages than the rest of the population. In fact, in the last 38 years, the 65-plus demographic averages a voting percentage of nearly 60 percent. In between the jabs and juvenile antics of the debates, we have not heard much about issues that impact seniors

According to the bi-annual study by the London Zoological Society and the World Wildlife Fund, global wildlife populations have declined by 58% since 1970. Freshwater environments, lakes and streams and their surroundings, says the report, are the most grievously damaged, with on average 81% of their 1970-level non-human animal life now missing. Methodological critiques of the report – deeming its authors to have mashed vast and variegated data excessively into too few signal numbers – abound. But no serious biologist denies that we are in the midst of an enormous extinction event. “Event” is the proper term, although not all mass extinctions happen with one great bang, of the Asteroid-Dinosaur variety. For perspective, the rebounding of new life after a mass extinction takes millions of years. On that scale, the demise happening right now all around us is horrifically sudden

It is not a new problem. Death from overwork has been publicly discussed for decades in Japan. Yet the recent suicide of a woman in Tokyo to escape the ravages of overwork at Dentsu has come to represent how endemic the issue has become for many who seek a better life in Japan.

Lincoln Center Theater and Playwrights Horizons, two of New York’s prime non-profits with well-earned reputations for quality plus numerous award-winners between them, both have intimate houses upstairs with small-for-off-Broadway capacities (under 130 seats). The Claire Tow (LCT3) and Peter Jay Sharp (PH) Theaters are often used for adventurous-but-chancy fare, with successful productions subsequently transferred to the mainstage or simply skipping to Broadway. Since both organizations have chosen to open their newest offerings tonight, we have no option but to place them in the very same review.

After all the passion that has swirled around immigration in this year’s election campaign, a curious thing happened in all three presidential debates: Latino-focused issues were hardly mentioned. When it came to real discussion, suggests Maria Hinojosa, it’s as if Donald Trump’s wall had already gone up.
Years ago, while raising my three children and taking numerous writing courses, my reading tastes were along the lines of works by A. S. Byatt, Anne Tyler, Anna Quindlen and John Irving, just to name a few, but I had friends who couldn’t stop talking about Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire .

Movie Review – Jackie K Cooper “The Accountant” (Warner Brothers) “The Accountant” is so fresh and so riveting you can overlook the minor plotholes that exist. Ben Affleck stars in this film as a man who is on the Autism spectrum. Not only is he good with figures but he is also a deadly force with his fists or with a gun.
