Bring out the inspiration Bring out the new American poetic tradition The new global poetic and musical movements That unite people of all races, colors and religions In the fight for global economic and social equality This is the populism that tramples the demagogues Not a fake populism that is nationalist, inegalitarian, isolationist and closed But real populism that is universal, global and post-national, True populism is borderless It is the truth that resides in every heart of everyone from Talahassee to Timbuktu It says that we are all equals, and must be, If there will be peace It says that the farmers and factory workers from Harlem to the Heartland are the same as the farmers and factory workers and engineers and doctors in Iraq, in South Africa, in Mexico, Russia, in every country And that there is a global class of monetary and power elites that are oppressing all of us And destroying our planet It is a populism that knows both communism and capitalism have failed to be sustainable And that we must boldly create a new way That compels us to come together and usher in an era of mutual responsibility Across the world It is time to make good on Our age-old birth rite the day when all people live as equals The dream Isaiah, Christ, Mohamed, Buddha, all dreamt of The truth that unites us all Let’s slam dunk the fake populists And give birth to a new global populism Let’s demand equality across borders between all nations, races and religions Between humanity and nature Then there will be peace The answer to nationalist populism Is global populism — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms. Donald Trump’s Reagan Moment

19Nov

Sometime before Inauguration Day, President-elect Trump will be briefed on the American plan for nuclear war, inclusive of the role he plays in ordering nuclear weapons release (i.e., the “nuclear codes”.)  John F. Kennedy was the first American president briefed on this plan, back in 1961.  Afterwards, a shaken Kennedy told his Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, “And we call ourselves the human race.” President Nixon was similarly appalled. “No matter what we do,” he told his National Security Council, “they the Soviets lose their cities…what a decision.” Ninety million Soviets would die in an American nuclear strike, Nixon was told.  And ninety million Americans would die in a Soviet retaliation

We Can’t Win a Fight We’re Not In

18Nov

In this wrenching week, I have been thinking about something my former boss Paul Wellstone liked to say: “You’ve got to start a fight to win a fight.” An animated professor-turned-senator from Minnesota, Paul’s willingness to be confrontational, and his refusal to back down from a fight he believed in, was central to his political and organizing strategy.

The barrier around a gorilla exhibit at the Cincinnati Zoo was not in compliance with regulations when a 3-year-old boy fell into the enclosure in May, according to a federal investigation.  Zoo officials questioned the finding by pointing out the barrier passed muster with federal authorities about a month before the boy’s fall.  “In its 38-year history, the barrier system at Gorilla World has always been found compliant during USDA inspections,” a statement from the zoo said.  A member of an animal response team fatally shot a Western lowland gorilla named Harambe on May 28 after determining that the ape posed an imminent threat to the child. The animal’s death unleashed a public fury that was directed both at the child’s mother and at the zoo for its decision to use lethal force.  Inspectors from the U.S.
