We Can’t Win a Fight We’re Not In

18Nov

In this wrenching week, I have been thinking about something my former boss Paul Wellstone liked to say: “You’ve got to start a fight to win a fight.” An animated professor-turned-senator from Minnesota, Paul’s willingness to be confrontational, and his refusal to back down from a fight he believed in, was central to his political and organizing strategy.

Which Trump? Early Signs Not Good

17Nov

Optimists are hoping for a Trump makeover. They cling to his brief victory remarks suggesting that he wants to be the “president of all the people.” In his 60 Minutes interview following the election Trump said that the protestors were out in the streets because “they do not know me.” They recall his statement some months ago that he had to say outlandish things in order to get greater media attention and reach more people than his Republican primary competitors. Character and personality are not prone to change in most people

A new British film that puts a gay twist on the science fiction genre is now available to stream online .  Directed by Mike Buonaiuto , ” Credence ” follows two gay fathers’ decision to “give up all their possessions to ensure the survival of their daughter, and the entire human race” after violent storms on Earth make life on the planet unsustainable. It stars Anthony Topham, Alex Hammond and Tia Kenny and had its world premiere at London’s Prince Charles Cinema in May.  Buonaiuto, who raised funds for the movie via an online campaign , told The Huffington Post in an email that “Credence” aims to “paint a picture of not just what sci-fi looks like when it’s a bit more progressive, but what all films can look like when they break free of LGBT stereotypes often seen in cinema.”  If Buonaiuto’s name sounds familiar, that’s because the director also helmed the viral ” Homecoming ” and ” Invisible Parents ” clips.  You can take a look at the movie’s trailer above, and check out a short, behind-the-scenes feature below. Miami beat Duke 30-27 Saturday night on a ridiculous game-winning kickoff return that featured eight laterals and just all around chaos on the field.  Miami appeared to have been moving backwards after the first seven laterals, but on the eighth, Miami cornerback Corn Elder caught the ball from his own nine yard line and ran 91 yards. In the stats, it was a 75-yard return, but they ended up covering much more of the field than that. During Elder’s scamper to the end zone, there was a block delivered that was originally ruled a block in the back and would have negated the touchdown.

Medicare To Cover End Of Life Planning

A high school football coach known for praying on the field after games has been placed on paid administrative leave after Satanists asked to hold their own invocation at Thursday night’s game.  Bremerton School District, located near Seattle, said late Thursday that coach Joe Kennedy had been placed on leave for his “refusal to comply with the District’s lawful and constitutionally required directives that he refrain from engaging in overt, public religious displays on the football field while on duty as a coach.” Kennedy had been asked not to pray on the field after games, but has continued to do so and has even threatened to sue the district .  He was placed on leave shortly after the local chapter of the Satanic Temple said it had been invited by at least one student to give an invocation on the field after the game.  “The school district needs to create religious opportunity for everyone or ban it completely,” class president Abe Bartlett, one of the students who contacted the Satanic Temple, told the Kitsap Sun. ” There can’t be a middle ground .” The district said that while no players complained about the prayer sessions, some may have felt coerced to join in.  “It is very likely that over the years, players have joined in these activities because to do otherwise would mean potentially alienating themselves from their team, and possibly their coaches,” the statement said. “The District has a fundamental obligation to protect the rights of all of its students.” The district didn’t mention the Satanists by name in its statement, but said it would not allow other groups to make use of the field during district functions such as the football game.  However, the Satanic Temple immediately released a statement of its own withdrawing its request to hold an invocation in light of the suspension .  “A big shout-out to the Bremerton School District for taking prompt and decisive action to stop coach Kennedy from continuing to violate the law with his public prayers while on duty,” Lilith Starr, head of the Seattle chapter of the Satanic Temple, wrote on Facebook. “By putting him on paid administrative leave and releasing a strongly-worded public statement, the district has sent an extremely clear signal that they will hold fast the line between church and state .” Starr said that while the temple will not be performing an invocation, members still plan to attend the game “in support of the students, teachers and community members who asked us to come represent their beliefs.”   (h/t Raw Story )   Also on HuffPost: — This feed and its contents are the property of The Huffington Post, and use is subject to our terms
